A little dog who honked every time he got excited. A vet visit that ended with a syrup we were told not to give for long, and a dog who spent the afternoon glassy-eyed on the couch. The cough came back anyway.

What nobody explained was the loop: the coughing keeps scraping the throat that triggers the next fit.
